Digital/electronic callipers – what are they used for?

Its main purpose is to perform precise measurements, both for amateur and professional use – in production or measurement laboratories. It allows for the measurement of elements as small as a few millimetres – it all depends on the parameters of the equipment we choose.

The most common digital callipers have a range of 150 mm, but there are also special models available on the market for measurements up to 3000 mm. The calliper can be connected to a computer, allowing the measurement to be quickly sent and saved.

Digital caliper – how does it work?

A digital caliper is an advancement of the traditional vernier or dial caliper design – the vernier or rack and pinion mechanism has been replaced by a linear encoder and LCD display. This combination allows measurements with a resolution of 0.01 or even 0.001 mm and quick and clear reading. The functionality of the device is extended by features such as changing the measurement unit (millimetres or inches), the ability to enter PRESET values and pause the measurement with HOLD – allowing for reading after use in places that are inaccessible to the eye.

Increasingly, digital calipers offer serial data output, which allows them to be connected to a dedicated recorder or personal computer. The digital interface significantly reduces the time needed to perform and record a series of measurements, as well as improving the reliability of the records. Depending on your needs, you can use a wired connection , e.g. the Proximityconnector in SYLVAC products, or a wireless connection using Bluetooth. In both cases, the data can be saved in any text file or spreadsheet, but also in special software for data collection and analysis and statistical process control, e.g. SYLCOM.

Electronic calliper – how to take measurements with it?

The practical use of the device does not differ significantly from the use of its traditional version. Before use, it is necessary to start the tool, slide the jaws together and reset the display. The next step is to position the jaws so that their spacing is greater than the dimensions of the object being measured. After placing the device on the measured element, press the jaws so that their edges fit snugly against the measured surface. The better we do this, the more accurate the measurements will be. The result will be displayed on the device screen.

Use of an electronic caliper

A calliper allows you to take external, internal and depth measurements. The electronic version is useful for all specialists who want to precisely measure and check an object, where speed and reliability of data recording are important factors – the electronics used significantly reduce the influence of the tool operator on the result obtained. Therefore, such a tool is widely used in home workshops, industrial plants and measurement laboratories.
